Charges have been filed against the woman accused of causing the wreck that killed an East Hall High School teacher and coach.
Deputies booked Maria Escobedo into jail on Wednesday, May 7, in connection with the death of Victor Vega. The 57-year-old Gillsville woman faces charges of 2nd-degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield while turning left.
Vega, a business teacher and coach, died early Tuesday, May 6, while on his way to work. The Georgia State Patrol says Escobedo failed to yield at the intersection of Old Cornelia Highway and Jesse Jewell Parkway and turned in front of Vega’s motorcycle, causing the fatal wreck.
Vega died at the hospital. His death sent shockwaves through the local community, with many remembering him as a kind and caring coach. A former college baseball player and U.S. airman, Vega had worked at East Hall since 2022.
Vega is survived by his wife, Bethany, and son, Victor Vega III. Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home in Gainesville. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
