The Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia is currently hosting a compelling exhibit, Ferguson Family: Clay and Kin, which runs through September 17, 2025. This exhibition honors the enduring legacy of the Ferguson family, renowned for their contributions to the folk pottery tradition in Northeast Georgia.
A Storied Lineage
The Ferguson family’s roots trace back to the Edgefield District of South Carolina, a historically significant region in the development of Southern pottery. Charles H. Ferguson, a pivotal figure in this lineage, established a pottery tradition passed down through generations. Today, over 60 potters are connected to Charles H. Ferguson through birth and marriage, continuing the family’s rich heritage in the craft.
Craftsmanship and Innovation
Charles H. Ferguson’s work is characterized by its bold simplicity and functionality. He crafted durable pieces such as crocks, jugs, and pitchers using local clays and traditional techniques. A distinctive feature of his pottery was the use of slip decoration—applying liquid clay to the surface to create intricate designs. These designs often blended African and European aesthetic traditions, reflecting the region’s diverse cultural influences.
The Exhibit Experience
The Clay and Kin exhibit offers visitors a rare opportunity to view an exceptional collection of pottery spanning multiple generations of Ferguson artisans. Each piece tells a story of the family’s craftsmanship, creativity, and cultural influences, highlighting their enduring impact on folk pottery in the region.
