The Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s (EPD) seasonal ban on open burning is in effect in 54 counties, including nine in Northeast Georgia. The ban started on May 1 and will last until September 30.
Regional counties impacted by the ban include Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Dawson, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, and Oconee. For a complete list of counties, click here.
During the ban, Georgians are prohibited from burning yard and land debris. The goal of the ban is to improve air quality and protect public health.
“Smoke from open burning can impact both the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, especially in children, elderly people, and people with preexisting conditions,” said James Boylan, Chief of the EPD Air Protection Branch.
While the ban is in effect, recreational activities like outdoor grilling and campfires are still allowed.
The EPD’s open burning ban has been in place annually since 2005. Some counties and cities in Georgia may have burning regulations that are stricter than the EPD’s ban.
