
AMERICUS, Ga. — A 19-year-old man is facing charges after bringing an AR-15 onto the Georgia Southwestern State University campus on April 23. Khamani Clayton, of Americus, faces charges of theft by receiving stolen property and carrying weapons within a school safety zone.
The incident began in the early morning hours when Clayton entered the campus with the rifle. According to the GBI, Clayton was seen near the dormitories with the firearm. He was later seen leaving campus with the rifle, prompting reports of an active shooter.
Law enforcement agencies, including the GBI, Americus Police Department, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Natural Resources, responded to the scene. They cleared the campus to ensure student safety.
Clayton was taken into custody by local law enforcement without incident. The GBI confirmed that no shots were fired and no students were harmed during the incident.
Clayton is currently booked in the Sumter County Law Enforcement Center.
