
The GBI is investigating after an inmate at the Athens-Clarke County Jail died Monday morning, April 22, following an apparent medical emergency.
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, around 7:55 a.m., jail staff found the 39-year-old man unresponsive during a routine check of housing units. They immediately started life-saving measures and called for medical staff.
EMS transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 10 a.m.
The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office did not release the inmate’s name and only identified him as an African American male.
The GBI is investigating the death, which is standard protocol, the sheriff’s office said. The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
