Movement on a new animal shelter in Habersham appears to be in sight.
Habersham County officials will gather at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 17 for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on a new Habersham County Animal Care and Control Facility.
The facility is one of the key projects funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII, which was approved by voters in 2021. After receiving the green light from the Habersham County Board of Commissioners last year, the project has completed its design phase and is now ready to move forward.
The new shelter will replace the existing facility and provide much-needed upgrades to better serve animals and the community, according to officials. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The ceremony will be held at the site of the future facility, located at 401 Old Athens Highway in Cornelia. Due to limited cleared space on the property, parking will be restricted. Attendees are encouraged to carpool, if possible.
