A police officer with the city of Jefferson in Jackson County is being accused of unlawfully disclosing confidential information to a city official, according to the GBI.
It’s unclear whether the individual was elected or hired.
GBI arrested and charged Reginald Lee New, a 58-year-old sergeant with the Jefferson Police Department, for allegedly disclosing the confidential information from the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) to an unauthorized individual before the officer’s recent arrest.
The Jefferson Police Department requested the GBI’s involvement after discovering that New allegedly shared protected information with the city official who was not authorized to access or possess such data from the GCIC system.
GCIC contains sensitive state information and serves as a database for criminal history and backgrounds of citizens.
New was apprehended without incident and has been booked into the Jackson County Jail, according to GBI.
