Police investigate shooting that left Commerce man dead

Authorities are investigating a shooting that left a Commerce man dead on Monday, February 19, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department. 

Around noon, Gwinnett County officers responded to a call reporting a person shot in the parking lot of 4915 Sugarloaf Parkway. Upon arrival, they found 43-year-old Donald Stewart of Commerce suffering from a gunshot wound. Stewart was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. 

Police apprehended the alleged shooter, identified as Michael Todd, 40, of Hoschton, who remained at the scene. Todd, Stewart’s employer, has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Authorities say the shooting stemmed from a work-related dispute between the two men. The altercation, which had no connection to the business at 4915 Sugarloaf Parkway, was an isolated incident, and investigators do not believe any other suspects were involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
