At Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Georgia, they believe in the power of women coming together to build homes, communities, and hope. The Women Build initiative is more than just a construction project—it’s a movement where women empower one another to create lasting change for families in White and Habersham Counties. Through collaboration, determination, and a shared vision, barriers are being broken and futures are made brighter.
It is an international event which started back in 1991. Habitat for Humanity of Northeast Georgia has been participating for approximately 20 years.
“There is so much enthusiasm and positivity that forms when these groups come together,” Brian Young, Executive Director said. “The amazing part is seeing women come out of their comfort zones and start using equipment some have never used before efficiently.”
What is Women Build?
Women Build is a unique program that brings women from all walks of life together to address the critical need for affordable housing in local communities. Through this initiative, women gain hands-on construction skills, raise funds, and work side-by-side with Habitat volunteers to help families achieve the dream of homeownership. Together, Habitat for Humanity of NE GA is not just constructing houses—they are constructing hope, opportunity, and brighter futures.
Affordable housing crisis
The lack of affordable housing is a growing crisis that affects countless families. In White and Habersham Counties, many families struggle to find safe, stable homes due to rising housing costs and limited availability of affordable housing options. For these families, homeownership often feels out of reach, making it difficult to establish a strong foundation for themselves and their children.
However, the organization believes a difference is being made. By participating in Women Build 2025, you’re helping combat the affordable housing crisis in communities and creating lasting change for the families who need it most. Your involvement helps ensure that more families can achieve homeownership and secure a stable, supportive environment for their future.
“To be on the worksite, volunteers must be 16 years of age. To operate equipment, 18 years of age,” Young said. “Last year, we had a Board Member who is 90 years old take part. The only requirement we have is high enthusiasm and a willingness to want to work.”
Young emphasized how much fun it is to join in. Ron Coker, construction manager for Habitat for Humanity of NE GA brings women together, working side-by-side, using nail guns and mitre saws, and having a blast doing it,” Young added.
