State and local investigators are investigating the scene of an overnight house fire in Banks County where a man was found dead.
According to Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols, firefighters found the man, in his sixties, inside a home at 627 Russ Rumsey Road in Maysville.
Units from Banks County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call about a house fire with someone trapped inside around 11:38 p.m. on Feb. 20. They arrived to find a single-family home “well-involved” with fire.
Nichols says firefighters attacked the fire from inside and attempted to locate the man.
“The fire was brought under control, and a male victim in his late sixties was found inside the structure,” says Nichols. “The cause of the fire is under investigation along with the cause of death by the Banks County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office, Banks’ County Coroner’s Office, and the Banks County Fire Department.”
The house was a total loss.
Chief Nichols says other family members were not at home when the fire broke out, but arrived home while it was still burning. Firefighters from Jackson County CI and Lee Arrendale State Prison assisted at the scene.
