A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for part of North Georgia with a Cold Weather Advisory in effect for the entire region.
RELATED Winter returns to the North Georgia mountains
Light snow fell across the region on Wednesday morning and some isolated snow showers are expected to continue at higher elevations through early Thursday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Pickens, Towns, Union, and White Counties through 1AM Thursday morning. Rabun County will remain under an advisory through 12PM Thursday.
Additional overnight accumulations of a trace to 1/2″ are possible at elevations above 2500ft, and refreezing of water on roadways from today’s runoff will result in scattered areas of black ice on untreated roadways, so use caution when traveling early especially across the high mountain passes.
Winds will increase as temperatures plummet overnight. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect through 10AM Thursday for all counties serviced by the National Weather Service out of Peachtree City. Wind chills are expected to reach near zero in the mountains, and into the single digits and low teens for the rest of the region on Thursday morning. If you have to spend time outside be sure to dress in layers to avoid any frostbite and hypothermia risk.
Winds will gust at 30-35MPH for the first half of the day before decreasing through afternoon. Highs on Thursday afternoon won’t get above freezing for most of the region with only those southeast of the mountains reaching to around 33-36º.
Temperatures will moderate heading into the weekend.
