The Hall County School District announced that Levi Selman, a Cherokee Bluff High School student, has been chosen to represent his school and community as a member of the esteemed “All American D-Day Band.” Selman, a drummer, holds several distinguished titles, including one of Georgia’s top young jazz musicians.
The D-Day Memorial Parade will bring together generations in a powerful event that honors WWII veterans and D-Day survivors while also educating and inspiring young Americans to salute their service.
The official ceremonies and parade will feature participants selected from across the United States, marching down Eisenhower Avenue in the historic village of Sainte-Mere-Eglise in Normandy. Special commemoration ceremonies will also occur at the Brittany American Cemetery and the Normandy American Cemetery.
Cherokee Bluff Band
Craig Cantrell, Director of Bands and Fine Arts Chair at Cherokee Bluff High School, said the achievement reflects Levi’s dedication and talent. “While the trip involves significant expenses estimated at around $4600, our band boosters are actively working to support Levi through fundraising efforts.”
Cantrell added that they are accepting donations to assist with the costs associated with the incredible opportunity for him to represent the community on such a monumental occasion.
The D-Day invasion
The D-Day invasion was a pivotal moment in history, marking the start of the liberation of Europe and forever changing the course of our nation and the world. It brought Americans together in the fight for freedom. The theme “Always Remember” is embodied in this “Living Memorial,” which unites Americans in honoring those who served and sacrificed their lives to preserve liberty for future generations.
It is only fitting that today’s young people, the direct beneficiaries of their sacrifice, come to the place where history was made to pay tribute to the heroes who made it happen. Through this event, there is a celebration to unite former enemies like the United States, Germany, and Japan, which are now united in friendship and alliance.
Hard work and talent
“Levi is ecstatic about this opportunity. His hard work and commitment to honing his craft have culminated in this moment, and it is heartening to see his efforts recognized on a national stage,” Cantrell expressed.
Levi recently returned from performing with the Georgia All-State Jazz Band. He was one of only two percussionists selected. He plans to further his musical education at the Berklee School of Music and focus on Jazz Drumming.
“This speaks volumes about his aspirations and talents,” Cantrell added.
The D-Day Memorial Parade is produced annually by Historic Programs. The All-American D-Day Band will perform in Normandy, France, in early June 2025. The band will rehearse in Washington, D.C., before traveling to France.
