STAR students and STAR teachers recognized in Hall County

The Kiwanis Club of Gainesville continued a longstanding tradition of paying tribute to the Hall County and Gainesville City STAR Students and STAR Teachers with an annual awards luncheon on Tuesday, January 28, at First Baptist Church in Gainesville. All of the city and county high schools’ STAR Students and STAR Teachers were recognized and given a framed certificate, sponsored by Gainesville Kiwanis.

STAR program 67th year

Now in its 67th year, the PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, is sponsored, administered, and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation.

The STAR program has honored nearly 30,000 students and the teachers they have selected as the most influential to their academic achievement since its creation.

To obtain the STAR nomination, graduating seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

The STAR Students and their STAR Teachers are for the county Benvon Roberts from Flowery Branch High School with teacher Kelley Brumbelow and for the city Makana Dyrud from Riverside Military Academy with teacher Andrew Jobson.

“Gathering to celebrate our STAR Students and their STAR Teachers is always an uplifting event,” Stan Lewis, Director of Communications and Athletics for Hall County Schools said.

“We appreciate the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville for once again hosting the banquet.” Lewis talked about how important it is to recognize academic and instructional excellence. “At the same time, it is reassuring to hear both the students and teachers share about each other’s character—their work ethic, their patience, and how they go the extra mile to treat others with dignity and respect. It provides us all with hope for the future,” Lewis added.
