Habersham County’s Board of Education will likely make a major decision at a special called meeting Wednesday, Jan. 29.
The meeting will take place at 4:30 p.m. at 144 Holcomb Street in Clarkesville.
During the meeting, the board is expected to name Patrick Franklin – currently the assistant superintendent – as the sole finalist to replace current Superintendent Matthew Cooper, effective April 1.
Cooper announced his retirement during a regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Cooper was commended throughout the meeting by school system officials for a list of accomplishments he’s implemented during his time as superintendent.
Habersham County Board of Education Attorney Jennifer Thacker said on Tuesday that the 14-day period for negotiations of Franklin’s contract now are winding down.
The details of Franklin’s contract are not yet available, according to school officials. Now Habersham will provide those details as they become available.
Legally, Thacker said the state does not require superintendent positions be listed – and candidates interviewed – publicly before a decision by board members is made.
“There is no state law that requires (the job) be posted and interviews be held,” she said.
