Habersham agencies respond to multiple accidents on icy roads Sunday

Habersham County first responders took multiple calls of wrecks caused by icy road conditions Sunday, Jan. 12, though only one person was hospitalized.

At 1:19 p.m. on Jan. 12, units from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle wreck on Orchard Road at Turnerville Circle, according to authorities.

The collision occurred when one vehicle lost control on a patch of ice and collided with another vehicle. One person was transported by Habersham County Emergency Services Med 9 to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Habersham. The Habersham County Road Department also responded to treat the icy road conditions, and the scene was cleared at 2:36 p.m.

Later, at 4:53 p.m., units were dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover accident on West Airport Road at Stapleton Road, just outside of Cornelia.

The vehicle overturned onto its side in a ditch, though no injuries were reported. The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation. Habersham County Road Department personnel also responded to treat the road conditions.

Then, at 10:55 p.m. Sunday, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and Habersham County Emergency Services responded to a crash at Apple Pie Ridge Circle and Gainesville Highway. In this incident, a vehicle traveled off an embankment and struck the guy wire of a utility pole, according to police.

Habersham County Emergency Services Med 12 responded to the scene and obtained two patient refusals from those in the vehicle. The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash, but further details about those involved are not yet available. Georgia Power was notified and dispatched personnel to assess damage to the guy wire. The road was cleared and reopened at 11:55 p.m.
