Cornelia City Park is closing for the holidays. The main part of the park, including the baseball field, tennis and basketball courts, will close October 27 so crews can start getting ready for the “Christmas in the Park” light display.
The free display, hosted by the City of Cornelia, boasts over 130,000 lights and attracts thousands of visitors each year. It opens Thanksgiving night.
Cornelia Building and Grounds Supervisor Gary Worley says city grounds and maintenance crews along with community service volunteers will work daily for five weeks to bring the magic to life. “We run power all over the ground to make it work,” says Worley. “It will take us almost until Thanksgiving night to get everything set up and working.”
Some sections of Cornelia City Park will remain open to the public, including the dog park area, walking trail, pavilion and playground at the Wyly Street entrance. The rest of the park will remain closed until January 16.
