A new era began Thursday afternoon as Robin Krockum was sworn in as the new Habersham County Sheriff by Probate Judge Pam Wooley. Krockum succeeds Sheriff Joey Terrell, who served for 16 years before deciding not to seek re-election.

Krockum, who faced no opposition in either the primary or general election, officially took office as the county’s top law enforcement official.

Krockum’s Experience

Krockum, a native of Habersham County and a 1991 graduate of Habersham Central High School, is a seasoned law enforcement professional. With master’s degrees in criminal justice and public administration, Krockum is also on track to complete his doctorate in public administration.

He spent the first decade of his career with the Demorest Police Department before leaving in 2006 to establish the Alto Police Department. He later joined the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a patrol commander, before returning to Demorest as the police chief in 2016.

In May of this year, Krockum retired from the Demorest Police Department and was hired by Sheriff Terrell as Chief Deputy at the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office to begin the transition into his new role.

A honored responsibility

Upon being sworn in, Krockum expressed his deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve as Sheriff. “It is truly an honor, which I do not take lightly,” Krockum said. “I appreciate the citizens of Habersham County for giving me the opportunity to continue serving them in my new role as Sheriff.”

Goals for the future

Looking ahead, Krockum outlined some of his key goals for his term as Sheriff. “I want to work with the commissioners to address many of the problems that we are facing as a county, including the need for a new jail,” he said. He also emphasized his commitment to tackling the county’s drug problem and ensuring safety within the school system. “I want to continue addressing our drug problem in the county, as well as working with our school system to provide safety for our children and school personnel.”

Building on the foundation

Having already served as Chief Deputy, Krockum has begun implementing changes at the Sheriff’s Office, with a focus on policy and personnel adjustments. “I’ve been very fortunate that Sheriff Terrell allowed me to come to work several months ago. He has given me the opportunity to make a few changes, such as in policy and personnel,” Krockum said. While he anticipates further adjustments as he settles into the role, he plans to take a thoughtful approach, evaluating the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office.

Krockum stressed that his leadership will remain focused on serving the citizens of Habersham County. “I was born and raised in Habersham County, which gives me a vested interest in the safety of our citizens. I have worked my entire law enforcement career in Habersham County and will continue working every day to keep your trust,” he said.

With Krockum’s swearing-in, a new chapter in Habersham County’s law enforcement history begins.
