A majority of customers who’d been without power in Habersham have seen utilities restored by 3:30 p.m. – when Georgia Power reported that number was down to 110.
Habersham EMC reports the number of customers without power is down to 63. About 30 people in White County still don’t have electricity, according to HEMC.
Power to the traffic light in downtown Demorest at Central Avenue and Georgia Street also has since been restored.
Just before 2 p.m., power outages had been reported in the Demorest and Clarkesville area, with Georgia Power showing 631 customers in Habersham without power. Wind speed was around 20 mph at that time. Those speeds have fallen to around 15 mph.
Habersham County Sheriff’s Office urges the public to use caution as agencies work to clear roadways.
“Wind gusts continue across the county and our deputies, public safety, and public works personnel are dealing with some downed trees and trees on power lines. Please drive with caution, especially after dark and on secondary roads where trees can fall and go undiscovered for longer periods of time,” Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell’s office posted to Facebook Wednesday. “Do not approach any downed lines or any trees or brush touching wires.”
Pockets of power outages occurred throughout North Georgia Wednesday as wind speeds have stayed at about 20 mph and downed trees in some areas.
“Crews are currently responding to outages caused by high winds and downed trees,” HEMC posted to Facebook around 11 a.m. Wednesday. “Please avoid downed lines and treat all as if energized.”
