The North Habersham Middle School Builders Club is in a race against the calendar to raise enough money to send students on an educational field trip.
The club has until December 30th to raise $10,180. That’s the amount still needed to cover the cost of the school’s 8th grade field trip for 25 students who, otherwise, won’t be able to go. The money will also be used to help drive down costs for all other students. The trip is scheduled March 21-23 of next year.
Club members and their sponsor, English teacher Heather Hawkins, have issued the Bobcat Charleston Challenge. An online fundraiser has been established at DonorsChoose.org.
In her online fundraising appeal Hawkins writes:
“My students need authentic learning experiences to connect with academic learning. This Charleston trip will provide historical and cultural learning opportunities.”
Hawkins describes the field trip experience as potentially “life-altering”, especially for those students who are “less fortunate and may never otherwise be provided travel opportunities.”
So far, 23 donors have raised $1,678 of the $11,858 goal. If the full amount is not raised by the December 30th deadline, the online fundraiser will expire. If that happens, DonorsChoose.Org will refund donors through account credits and the 8th grade students relying on the assistance will have to find help some other way.
Hawkins and Builder Club members are working hard to keep that from happening, but they can’t do it alone. They’re asking local and online communities to help. Hawkins stresses no donation is too small. “Every donor who gives on-line will also bring more national attention to our efforts to fund the project. Sometimes, the number of donors is just as important as the amount of the donation, so even very small donations will contribute to our large cause.”
Yard sale benefit this weekend
A parking lot yard sale is scheduled this weekend to benefit the Bobcat Charleston Challenge. It will be held Saturday, October 17 from 9am-2pm in the parking lot of North Habersham Middle School in Clarkesville. For $10 you can rent a parking space to sell your own items or you may donate items for students to sell.
Proceeds will go towards making sure no North Habersham Bobcat is left behind when the buses roll for Charleston in March.
To reserve a space or get more information about the yard sale and online fundraiser, email [email protected] or call 706-754-2915.
