Nearly twenty-four hours after the polls closed for Rabun County voters, they now know that one person was voted in by voters to fill the vacant Board of Education Post 5 seat.
In a unique race that required individuals to qualify as a write-in candidate, Rick Story received more than 75% of the votes for the Board of Education seat. The election results could not be verified Tuesday because the three candidates were not listed on the ballot, requiring an actual hand count by the Rabun County Board of Elections and Registration.
That count started Wednesday morning and concluded late Wednesday afternoon.
There were 4,162 write-in ballots cast for the BOE Post 5 seat. Only 3,317 of those votes counted for the qualified candidates. Below is how the results turned out.
Rick Story- 2,495 75.22%
Eric Thurmond- 678 20.44%
Jason Streetman- 144 4.34%
Story was appointed to the Rabun County Board of Education this past May after Molly Lima resigned a month prior. She had qualified as a candidate for re-election for the May primary. Story will be sworn in for a full 4 year term in January.
