The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert via Facebook on Monday, Oct. 28, urging residents to be wary of potential parking ticket scams.

“Not all parking tickets are legitimate,” the post said. “Drivers who find an unexpected parking ticket on their car or receive a ticket in the mail should verify that it is a bona fide ticket before taking action to pay it.”

Authorities advise residents to reach out directly to the law enforcement agency listed on the ticket – or the city or county clerk of court – to verify the ticket is legitimate.

The post went on to tell members of the public to “not use the contact information on the ticket, as it could be fake,” and to “research the phone number yourself so you know it’s legitimate.”

If there’s no law enforcement agency listed on the ticket, if it’s from an unknown agency or an area the ticket’s recipient has not recently visited, Habersham’s Sheriff’s Office says “that is a red flag.”

If there’s anything suspicious about the ticket, according to the sheriff’s office, then contact local authorities.
