The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office took a South Carolina man into custody on drug charges early last week after he was pulled over for speeding.

A deputy was traveling south on Highway 17 Alternate near New Road in Stephens County Tuesday, Oct. 15 when he observed a gray northbound Nissan Altima going 71 mph in a 55 mph zone.

During a traffic stop, the report states the deputy noted “a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.”

The driver, identified as Travis Cleveland, 40 of Walhalla, S.C., allegedly “admitted to having marijuana in the vehicle and gave the deputy a small purple tray with a small amount of marijuana.”

Cleveland and the passenger, Brandon Parris, 23 of Walhalla, S.C., were instructed to exit the Altima as the deputy searched the vehicle. Police say a grocery bag containing suspected marijuana and multiple drug-related objects were located in the backseat.

Marijuana, drug-related objects and a small white pill believed to be Tramadol allegedly were located in other parts of the vehicle.

Authorities say Cleveland claimed ownership of the marijuana and drug-related objects in the vehicle, and Parris was released. The report states that a field sobriety test on Cleveland found that he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Cleveland was arrested and charged with with illegal possession of a schedule I controlled substance, illegal possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and possession and use of drug related objects.
