Shooting at Albany State leaves one dead, 5 injured

One person is dead and five others injured following a shooting at Albany State University (ASU) Saturday night, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

The shooting occurred around 8:50 p.m. near a campus concert during the university’s Homecoming Weekend festivities.

De’Marion Tashawn Daniels, 19, of Newnan, Georgia, was killed in the incident. Daniels was not an ASU student, according to the GBI.

Five others were injured in the shooting, including a 13-year-old girl from Albany, two local high school girls, aged 16 and 17, a 20-year-old girl, and a 19-year-old girl. The GBI says the 20-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet, and the 19-year-old girl was injured while attempting to flee.

Injured victims received initial treatment at a campus triage site before transport to a local hospital for further care.

The Albany State University Police Department responded to the incident with assistance from local and state law enforcement. The GBI was requested to assist with the investigation at approximately 9:10 p.m.

Following the shooting, the campus was placed on lockdown and a search was conducted for the suspect(s). The GBI says no arrests have been made at this time.

The GBI is actively investigating the shooting.
