The city of Cleveland has a new set of zoning ordinances and a new zoning map. The city council voted to rescind the existing ordinance and map and adopt the new set during a called meeting on Oct. 15.
Before adoption, the council held two public hearings about the issue, during which Economic Development and Planning Director Tom O’Bryant detailed changes.
O’Bryant said the current regulations were adopted in 1970, and several changes have been made over the years. He said a lot of the language was old, and procedures were outdated.
“This has been actually a five-year process,” said O’Bryant. “We have hit it really hard with the planning and zoning board literally starting about two years ago, and we had to update our comprehensive plan, our future land use map. There was a whole process for that, and then we had a whole series of public hearings on that, and then we announced we were undertaking the zoning ordinance update.”
According to O’Bryant, this ordinance brings the city up to date and provides a better way to move forward.
The new ordinance and map will go into effect on November 1.
