Local and state law enforcement officers will conduct vehicle checkpoints in the Athens area on Oct. 18. The checkpoints are in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Piedmont Area Traffic Enforcement Network (PATEN).
While the specific locations of the checkpoints will not be disclosed in advance for officer safety, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department emphasized their commitment to public safety.
Sergeant Vincent Schill, a member of the ACCPD Traffic Unit and checkpoint organizer, highlighted the importance of driver responsibility in achieving a 13% decrease in traffic crashes this year.
“This achievement shows that collective responsibility on the road truly makes a difference,” said Schill. He further emphasized the need for continued caution, urging drivers to abstain from drinking and driving, remain focused, avoid distractions, and prioritize safety.
Drivers encountered during the checkpoints will receive educational flyers containing local statistics and information about the purpose of these checkpoints.
