Oglethorpe County jailer accused of inappropriate conduct with female inmate

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested a former Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office jailer for allegedly bringing contraband to a female inmate and engaging in inappropriate conduct with her.

According to a press release from the GBI, 33-year-old Zachariah Smith of Elberton was arrested on Tuesday, October 8, following an investigation requested by the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation revealed that Smith allegedly provided the female inmate with contraband in early October 2024 and engaged in inappropriate conduct with her. No further details on the nature of the contraband or the conduct were provided.

Without incident, Smith was arrested and booked into the Oglethorpe County Jail. He faces charges of items prohibited for possession by inmates and violation of oath of office.
