Flood Watch in effect across Georgia

Much of Georgia is under a flood watch. The National Weather Service issued an updated flood watch early Wednesday that is in effect until 2 p.m. Friday.

Counties in the watch area include Baldwin, Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Bibb, Bleckley, Butts, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Chattahoochee, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Crawford, Crisp, Dade, Dawson, DeKalb, Dodge, Dooly, Douglas, Elbert, Emanuel, Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Franklin, Fulton, Gilmer, Glascock, Gordon, Greene, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Hancock, Haralson, Harris, Hart, Heard, Henry, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Lamar, Laurens, Lumpkin, Macon, Madison, Marion, Meriwether, Monroe, Morgan, Murray, Muscogee, Newton, North Fulton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Peach, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Pulaski, Putnam, Rabun, Rockdale, Schley, Spalding, Stephens, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taliaferro, Taylor, Telfair, Terrell, Thomas, Toombs, Treutlen, Troup, Twiggs, Union, Upson, Walker, Walton, Warren, Washington, Webster, Wheeler, White, Whitfield, Wilcox, Wilkes, Wilkinson.

In South Carolina, the Weather Service says flooding could impact the Greater Oconee and Pickens County areas.

Torrential rainfall Thursday

Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall are expected through Wednesday night in north Georgia, with widespread torrential rain Thursday into Friday.

Storm-total rainfall of 8-12 inches is expected along the entire length of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, with widespread 5-8 inches across the remainder of the mountains and Piedmont.

The NWS comments, “This has the potential to be an extremely rare event with significant and damaging flash-flooding along numerous streams.”

Areas that are not typically impacted by floodwaters may flood.
