The driver of a minivan walked away without injuries after their vehicle got stuck on the railroad tracks in Cornelia and was hit by an oncoming train.
Officials say the minivan was crossing the tracks at the Rosa Parks and First Street crossing on Saturday when the driver was blinded by approaching traffic and ran off the road. The vehicle got stuck on the tracks.
In an emailed press release, Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith states, “The driver of the van contacted a wrecker service and not Habersham County Dispatch. The train struck the passenger’s side of the van causing extensive damage.”
The accident was worked by the Norfolk Southern train police department.
There were no injuries reported.
