Alto police: Man accidentally shoots woman

A 22 year old man accidentally shot a female while cleaning a gun on Friday, August 16,  according to Alto Police Chief Josh Ivey.

Emergency personnel were dispatched last Friday at around 5:45 p.m. to the residence of 114 Cook Street in Alto. According to Ivey, he was notified of the incident at 5:51 p.m. Alto Police Department did not have an officer available at the time of the call. Baldwin Police Department and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office investigator and Ivey investigated the scene and determined that the male was attempting to clean a new gun that he had purchased when the gun discharged striking a female in another room.

According to Ivey, the female was transported to the hospital and released a few days later.

Ivey stated that the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation into the incident.
