Former Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has released his first children’s book. Deal, who now lives in Habersham County, wrote Veto, the Governor’s Cat as a tribute to his late wife Sandra.
As a teacher and first lady, Sandra Deal championed literacy and early childhood education. She passed away from cancer at the age of 80 in 2022. Her husband’s new book tells the story of two rescue cats who take up residence in the governor’s mansion and learn about life, love, friendship, and loss.
Based on real-life rescues
According to the publisher, this heartwarming tale follows the adventures of real-life rescues, Veto and Bill, as they navigate their new lives in the mansion. While there, they encounter various challenges and triumphs, with each chapter bringing a new adventure that reinforces the power of empathy and compassion.
These beloved pets, who moved from the city to the country with the Deals when they left office, continued to bring joy and teach meaningful lessons. Veto still lives with Deal today.
Atlanta-based BookLogix published the book, which Cheryl Riner Hodge illustrated. The publisher says through Veto’s eyes, children will learn the importance of accepting differences and trying new things.
“The narrative gently guides young readers through complex emotions, offering valuable lessons on understanding grief and loss,” a news release about the book states.
‘Deeply personal and rewarding’
Governor Deal says writing the children’s book was a “deeply personal and rewarding journey,” adding that his late wife’s legacy still inspires him.
“Through the adventures of Veto and Bill, I share the values of empathy, resilience, and love that Sandra cherished. I sincerely hope young readers and their families find joy and comfort in these pages,” says Deal.
A portion of the proceeds from the book will benefit literacy and educational initiatives through The Deal Foundation.
The book is available for pre-order now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and everywhere books are sold. It will be available for sale on August 14, 2024. For more information, follow @VetotheCat on Instagram and Facebook.
