Northeast Georgia authorities warn of scams circulating in the region

The sheriff’s offices in Hart and Stephens counties recently issued alerts urging the public to beware of scammers. Both current scams are rehashes of ones the public has seen before, but they are active again, and authorities want people to be on guard.

Here are two of the schemes you need to watch out for:

Fake warrant scam

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a telephone scam where people claim to be deputies and demand payment for fake warrants.

According to a press release, scammers are “spoofing” the sheriff’s office number and telling potential victims they have a warrant out for their arrest and can be arrested if they don’t pay up.

The scammers then tell people to send money through a cryptocurrency machine to take care of the warrant.

Officials warn that the sheriff’s office will never contact the public soliciting payment for a warrant. Anyone who receives one of these calls is urged to hang up immediately and contact the sheriff’s office.

Asphalt scam

Stephens County residents are warned of door-to-door salesmen offering asphalt and driveway sealing services at very low prices. The sheriff’s office warns these scam artists may use a ruse to gain access to your home.

“It may sound appealing, but be wary,” the alert from the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office states. “If these travelers come knocking at your door, choose wisely. Ask them to leave, call 911, or simply do not engage.”

If you need these services, several local and reputable companies can provide them.
