Gainesville man drowns in Lake Lanier

A 76-year-old Gainesville man was found dead in Lake Lanier Wednesday night after his friend reported him missing.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Forsyth County divers recovered Jim Hansard’s body in 13 feet of water.

Hansard was last seen around lunchtime on June 5 at a dock near Keith Bridge Park in Forsyth County. Hours later, around 9:30 p.m., Forsyth County emergency personnel responded to a report of a possible drowning in the area.

“A friend of the subject saw the man’s golf cart still at the dock and noticed a water shoe floating nearby,” says DNR Public Affairs Officer Mark McKinnon.

DNR game wardens used boat-mounted sonar to locate Hansard. McKinnon says he is the second person to drown in Lake Lanier this year.
