Truett McConnell College President Dr. Emir Caner speaks at Cleveland Care Center event.
(Cleveland)-When you say Cleveland Care Center, not a lot of people know what you’re talking about, but more know now following a special Gala Fundraising event held Thursday night at Mount Yonah Baptist Church. Cleveland Care Center is a pregnancy resource center that works with women who need special help at this time in their lives.
They offer many services like, free pregnancy testing, non-judgmental mentoring, life application sessions, Lamaze and lactation support and now Ultrasound services. The center recently received a used ultrasound machine donated by Paulding County Pregnancy Center. The center supports pro-life choice first, but also post abortive counseling.
Dr. Emir Caner, President of Truett McConnell College was the keynote speaker for the event. Caner told the crowd about the colleges fight to uphold life of the unborn, he said in 2010 when the affordable care act was passed, the college was told it had to hand out abortion inducing drugs. It’s part of the health care plan and you can’t do anything about it, they were told. If they didn’t do it they could be fined 3-3/12 million dollars a year, which would shut down the college. Because of the belief that the college teaches they said no and went to court.
A recent appellate court ruled they had to hand out the drugs or they would be fined, but two days before a September first deadline the court put a stay on the order. Now the case is headed to the Supreme Court.
But Caner admits, due to the makeup of the court they don’t have a chance to win, but he said, they have to take a stand, “ listen very carefully, if this idea doesn’t mean personal sacrifice, you will never be involved for a lifetime and I would rather someone drive by Truett McConnell and see it closed because we stood for life, than drive by Truett McConnell and see it open because we weakened our stance and didn’t stand for life,” said Caner.
The gala dinner was held to showcase the work of the center including the new Ultrasound service and Chris Anderson, a member of the Cleveland Care Center board of directors said, they also were seeking fund so the center can move into a better facility and expand the services they offer.
