Randall Green of Alto told the Habersham County Commissioners Monday night that “a lot of people let trash fall off of their trucks” near the property he owns in the area of Dicks Hill Parkway – not far from the county’s dump. He said he recalled the county having a policy that “garbage loads must be secured in trucks.”
Loads of garbage are not being secured, he added, or there wouldn’t be so much trash on the ground on his property. He questioned the commissioners about their responsibility in seeing that garbage is secured.
Commission Chairman Andrea Harper said it is the commission’s responsibility to “write the policy,” but the Sheriff’s Department’s responsibility to “enforce the law.” Green responded that it would be good “to get it enforced all the time.”
Chairman Harper thanked Mr. Green for coming to the meeting to voice his concern. Green responded that there was another thing he wanted to say. He said that “in previous commissions,” there were large amounts of money spent, “and some big mistakes were made.” He urged this commission, when large amounts of spending are being considered to “get some advice.”
He then told a story to the commissioners that ended with this advice: “always do the right thing, and you’ll satisfy most of the people.”
