Doris Elise Bates Quarles

Doris Elise Bates Quarles, age 97, of Cornelia, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 16, 2024.

Born in Sanford, North Carolina, on November 19, 1926, Mrs. Quarles was the daughter of the late Clyde A. and Lena Rawl Bates. Mrs. Quarles had a love for journalism, which led to her being one of the first employees of the Tri-County Advertiser, where she was a reporter and photographer. She also was an educator and librarian in the Habersham County School System for many years. Mrs. Quarles was the eldest member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she will fondly be remembered as a servant in WMU and Sunday School, as well as a wonderful source of encouragement to others.

Mrs. Quarles’s greatest accomplishments and titles are wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Quarles is preceded in death by her husband, Broadus Quarles, brother Clyde A. Bates, Jr., sister Frances Bates Hair, daughter-in-law Gloria Huff Quarles, and grandson-in-law Andy Turner.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Jayne Quarles Huff (Al Peters) and son Rick Quarles, all of Cornelia; son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Connie Quarles of Cleveland; grandchildren Matthew Quarles (Cherie), Jesse Huff (Katie), Megan Williams, Beth Turner, Andrew Huff, Ben Quarles and Sarah Franks (Zac); great-grandchildren Justin Williams, Evan Quarles, Kalyn Quarles, Owen Huff, Alyssa Chitwood, Annabelle Chitwood, Quinn Huff, Gemma Turner and Hutton Franks, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Hillside Memorial Chapel with Rev. Matthew Butler and Mr. Andy Bates officiating. Interment will follow the service in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the funeral from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Sunday.
