MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Piedmont University baseball team concluded the 2024 season with a 10-2 loss to Maryville Friday in the CCS Tournament. The Lions end the season with a 25-17 record.
The Scots were first on the board as the ball was flying deep on Friday with four total home runs in the contest. The Scots had a home run in the second inning but Piedmont answered with a solo shot in the fifth by Tyler Nelson, his first and only home run of the season.
In the home half of the fifth, the Scots took control with a three-run inning off starter Adam Metivier, including three straight doubles. In the sixth, Piedmont closer Braden Simms was brought in to attempt to limit the damage, but the Scots tacked on another two runs on four hits to claim a 6-1 lead heading into the seventh.
Tyler Nelson doubled to start the seventh inning and later scored on a Cole Ellis groundout, but that was the final run the Lions would manage.
Simms worked a clean seventh, but the Scots got a solo shot off him in the eighth before he gave way to Tyner Simpson. Maryville’s final runs came off a 3-run home run later that inning to seal the 10-2 final.
TURNING POINT:
–A three-run fifth inning tipped the scales in favor of the home-standing Maryville Scots.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
—Tyler Nelson went 2-for-3 with a home run in the contest, his lone of the season.
–Tyler Roon closed out his career, throwing the final 0.2 innings of work for the Lions, allowing just one hit to the three batters he faced.
