A crowd of about 60 people gathered at Freedom Park in Downtown Cleveland Thursday at noon to observe the National Day of Prayer. Congress designated this annual observance, which is held on the first Thursday of May, as a time for people to ” turn to God in prayer and meditation.”
The observance in Cleveland was organized by the White County Ministerial Fellowship. Ministers of that group took time during the observance to pray. Patrick Ballington from the Bridge Church prayed for unity in the nation and the world, and Chattahoochee Christian Church Pastor Frank Zimmerman prayed a prayer of praise.
Joe Gist, the pastor of First Methodist Church in Cleveland, offered a prayer of Thanksgiving. Dr. Phil Weaver, pastor of Cleveland First Baptist, prayed for repentance. John Harrison, pastor of Nachoochee Presbyterian Church, prayed a prayer of petition. Jeff Ford, pastor of Helen First Baptist Church, prayed a prayer of blessing.
Following a time of prayer, singer and music teacher April Rooks led the group in singing “How Great is Our God.”
Jeff Groves, President of the Ministerial Fellowship, expressed his appreciation for those who participated.
“Great time, great spirit I know we heard a lot of pastors pray, but there were a lot of other pastors in the audience helping us pray along, and it’s just great that there are so many that are like, ‘Hey man, I will pray if you want me to and I will come and support if you want me to,'” he said. “That is the kind of community we live in; just such a great spirit from everybody here. It’s awesome!” said Groves.
