Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson has been diagnosed with cancer and will need chemotherapy. In a statement, Thompson says he was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which has spread to his liver.
“While we wait on a final prognosis, I can assure you I will continue to be who I have always been – a fighter,” Thompson wrote. He went on to say that, “From the start, my life has been full of what seem like insurmountable challenges, but I’ve never given up and this farm boy from Montana doesn’t intend to start now.”
Before being elected as state labor commissioner in 2022, Thompson served in the Georgia Senate. An Army veteran who found success in the private sector, Thompson founded several automatic swimming pool cover businesses, an insurance agency, an insurance software company, and a commercial development company.
In the statement, the first-term Republican says he will continue his work as labor commissioner.
“To be clear, I will continue to fulfill my duties as Labor Commissioner throughout this time and will work with my highly professional and qualified staff to ensure Georgia citizens are served with uninterrupted excellence.”
Thompson says he is awaiting further information on the cancer diagnosis and a final prognosis for chemotherapy. He asks for prayers for himself, his family, and the DOL staff “as we prepare to boldly take on this next battle.”
