Authorities have identified the man found hanging from a tree at High Shoals Falls as 29-year-old Trevonte Jamal Shubert-Helton of Sautee Nacoochee.
A hiker at the Swallow Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) north of Helen discovered the body around 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 21.
The hiker contacted Towns County 911 to alert authorities about the death. The Towns County Sheriff’s Office asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist with the investigation.
According to a statement released on Feb. 22 by the GBI, “The preliminary investigation indicates this death is an isolated incident, and Shubert-Helton was by himself at the WMA.” His body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur for an autopsy.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is also assisting with the investigation, which is active and ongoing.
High Shoals Falls is located approximately 12 miles north of Helen, Georgia. The trail leading up to the falls is a popular hiking destination in the Chattahoochee National Forest.
