Crashes claim 24 lives in Georgia over holidays

Twenty-four people died in wrecks in Georgia during the long holiday weekends, authorities say. The Georgia State Patrol reports 15 people died over Christmas, while nine died during New Year’s.

Both travel periods were 102 hours long.

There were no fatal wrecks in Northeast Georgia over the holidays.

In addition to fatal crashes, state troopers investigated 921 wrecks resulting in 461 injuries during the holidays. The Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) helped investigate the wrecks.

Combined, state troopers and MCCD officers conducted a total of 32,684 traffic stops and made 725 DUI arrests. They issued 17,527 tickets and 20,396 warnings.
