Mountain Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Chan Caudell and District Attorney Brian Rickman are among 214 nominees for three new seats on the Georgia Court of Appeals. The state legislature earlier this year expanded the court from 12 to 15 justices in an attempt to ease the court’s caseload.
Nominations were accepted from anyone who chose to submit them and candidates were allowed to nominate themselves. Not all of the nominees are expected to apply. Candidates must complete their application by September 15.
According to the Daily Report, the “overwhelming number of nominees presents a management challenge” for the Judicial Nominating Commission which is now waiting to see how many of the nominees will actually apply. The full commission is scheduled to conduct interviews October 5 and 6 and will then forward a short list to Governor Nathan Deal who will then appoint the new justices.
