Wrecks killed at least 23 people on Georgia’s roads over the long Thanksgiving holiday.
One of those fatalities occurred in Northeast Georgia when a driver fleeing from a road check crashed into a tree, state troopers say. The vehicle caught fire. Authorities have not publicly identified the driver.

In metro Atlanta’s Henry County, a driver died in a chain reaction wreck on I-75 North early Thanksgiving Day. The wreck caused a tractor-trailer to jackknife. A Dodge Charger ran into the truck, killing the driver.
Five people died in a crash on GA 111 in Colquitt County on Thanksgiving, Nov. 23. Troopers say an eastbound Ram pickup truck struck a Ford van carrying nine people head-on. The pickup truck driver and four others in the van were taken to area hospitals.
The State Department of Public Safety also reported fatal wrecks in Perry, Columbus, Newnan, Griffin, Brunswick, Sylvania, Dublin, Rome, Reidsville, Atlanta, Thomasville, Dekalb, Fulton County, Monroe, and Douglas.
Last year, 18 people died in traffic accidents in Georgia over the long Thanksgiving holiday. This year’s travel period lasted from Wednesday at 6 p.m. to Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
