A number of Clarkesville homes, businesses, and restaurants are under a boil water advisory after a water line sprung a leak Monday. Crews closed Brightwell Street while they repaired the line.
The city issued the advisory as a precaution. It affects water customers in the Grant Street corridor between Washington Street and Old Clarkesville Mill Road (see map below).
Those in the affected areas are advised to bring their tap water to a rolling boil for at least two minutes before drinking, cooking, or making baby food with it.
The boil water advisory is in effect until further notice.
Faulty valve blamed
Clarkesville contracts with ESG Operations, Inc. for their public works services. Project Manager Joe Deputy says a valve failed on a 10-inch line that feeds the downtown area, causing the leak. It took crews about five hours to fix it.
They restored service to the area around 1 p.m., and Brightwell Street reopened shortly after.
According to Deputy, the city has alerted the Habersham County Department of Environmental Health of the situation due to the number of businesses and restaurants affected by the boil water advisory.
