The countdown is on to one of Habersham County’s biggest events of the year. The annual United Way Family Fun Fest is this Saturday, August 29th from 5-9PM at the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center in Clarkesville. It’s the official kick-off to the local United Way’s annual fundraising campaign. Habersham County United Way Executive Director Billy Boyd says hundreds of volunteers have spent the past four months planning and organizing the event. “It’s all coming together,” he says, “It’s just the little detail stuff that’s left to get it set up.”
There will be carnival games and rides at the Fun Fest along with a full line-up of family entertainment (see below). Admission is $5 for everyone and includes unlimited rides, games, entertainment and fireworks. Food and merchandise will be sold separately. VIP parking will be available in front of the Aquatic Center for $15 – the price includes a coupon for a free car wash. Free shuttle buses will be available for those who park across the street at the county fairgrounds.
Cash and credit cards accepted
Boyd says two new events have been added this year – laser tag and sumo wrestling (the inflatable bodysuit kind). Other than that, “Basically the games and rides are what we’ve had for the past few years,” he says.
This is Boyd’s first year at the helm of United Way organizing Family Fun Fest. He succeeded Bonnie Loffredo as executive director last fall. “I don’t think I had a grasp of how much work and coordination of effort goes into making this happen,” he says. “There are three, four, five hundred people involved. It’s a huge event and we couldn’t do it without volunteers and community support from our sponsors.” Boyd says he’s hoping for good weather and a good turnout on Saturday.
The Habersham County United Way supports 25 non-profit agencies. This year’s fundraising goal is $575,000. The campaign theme is “Get in the Game” and Boyd says, “It’s certainly a team effort, that’s for sure.
