There’s been a change in the top of leadership at the Banks County Sheriff’s Office. On Wednesday, Chief Deputy Shawn Wilson announced his retirement. Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed promoted Major Carissa McFadden to succeed him.
McFadden’s law enforcement career spans over 17 years, ten of which have been with the Banks County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). Major McFadden was BCSO’s first public information officer. She has held training and command posts at every agency level, most recently serving as the BCSO headquarters bureau commander.
In a videotaped announcement naming McFadden as his second in command, Sheriff Speed said he made his decision after “much thought and consideration.”
McFadden said she’s grateful for the opportunity.
“Sheriff Speed’s decision humbles me, and I look forward to serving the community of Banks County in my new capacity as chief deputy.”
‘Seen my share of highs and lows’
Wilson is retiring after more than 32 years in law enforcement. He said he spent every day on the job in Banks County “in hopes of helping the public and helping serve this community.”
“Since 1991, I have seen my share of highs and lows in public safety, and as I close out this chapter of my life, I want to thank Sheriff Speed for giving me this opportunity over the last ten years,” Wilson said.
The now-former chief deputy thanked the members of the community and those in the sheriff’s office who helped him succeed. “And last but not least, I want to thank my God and my family,” he said.
Speed said Wilson will continue working with the sheriff’s office in an advisory role as Chief Mcfadden adjusts to her new responsibilities.
“Chief Wilson will help with many technological updates and building projects the sheriff’s office has underway,” the sheriff said.
