An afternoon wreck Saturday claimed the life of a Demorest man. The Georgia State Patrol says 52-year-old Aaron Hopkins died in a single-vehicle crash on Lake Russell Road.
The wreck happened shortly after 5 p.m. on August 5 near Grandview Avenue.
Hopkins was driving a BMW 328IT sedan northbound on Lake Russell Road, negotiating a curve. The car ran off the road’s right shoulder and down an embankment; the passenger side struck a tree.
Troopers say Hopkins was not wearing a seatbelt. He died at the scene.
Law enforcement closed the road leading to the Lake Russell Recreation Area in Mt. Airy following the crash. The road remained closed while the investigation continued.
Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the wreck.
This is the second death to occur at the popular Forest Service recreation area in the past several months. On June 17, a 12-year-old boy died while swimming in Lake Russell with friends.
