GSP: Fleeing motorcyclist injured in pursuit

A high-speed motorcycle chase in Franklin County abruptly ended when the motorcycle ran into a truck. The Thursday afternoon wreck seriously injured the male motorcycle driver. He’s been identified as 24-year-old David Kanoa Das of Winder.

The incident began just before 2 p.m. on July 27 on the I-85 Northbound Exit 173 off-ramp near GA 17. A trooper from Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell attempted to stop the motorcyclist for speeding (91 mph in a 70 mph zone) and no tag.

According to the state patrol, the motorcyclist initiated a vehicle pursuit onto GA 17 and turned left into the RaceWay Gas Station parking lot off the exit ramp.

“The motorcycle sped through the parking lot and entered back onto GA 17. As the motorcycle traveled westbound on GA 17 in the eastbound outside lane, a black Dodge Ram 3500 with a 40-foot trailer was attempting to turn left onto the Interstate 85 Southbound Exit 173 on-ramp,” the state patrol report says.

The motorcycle struck the rear driver’s side of the Dodge, seriously injuring the motorcycle driver.

“Troopers on the scene immediately rendered aid,” says GSP Post 52 Sgt. Ray Dean. They administered CPR and used a state-issued Automated External Defibrillator on the driver to revive him.

Franklin County EMS transported Das by ambulance to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. Troopers charged him with multiple offenses, including felony fleeing, speeding, reckless driving, no registration, driving on the wrong side of roadway, DUI (drugs), misdemeanor possession of marijuana, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to yield while turning left, and improper passing.

The driver of the Dodge, Rantravious Salathiel Carmichael of Oakland, Mississippi, was not injured.
