GDOT moves up construction of RCUT at Mt. Zion

The Georgia Department of Transportation has informed local legislators that it has moved up the construction timeline for an RCUT at the GA 365 and Mt. Zion Road intersection. The project is now GDOT’s “top priority” in the area, says Sen. Bo Hatchett.

Work on the RCUT is expected to begin immediately.

The RCUT will be constructed in the median to prevent vehicles on Mt. Zion from crossing over all four lanes of the highway. Once it’s completed, drivers will have to turn right off of Mt. Zion in either direction and use a downstream U-turn to cross over to the other side of the road.

These five crosses and the memories of two others who died here bear witness to the tragedies that have unfolded at this intersection in the past two years. (Jerry Neace/NowHabersham.com)

The project was discussed 17 months ago during a GDOT meeting with local elected and business leaders. That meeting occurred four months after two family members died in a wreck at the Mt. Zion crossover. Five more people died at that same crossover just this week.

This week’s wreck renewed community calls for action to make the heavily trafficked Highway 365 safer. GDOT has responded and will soon meet with local officials to lay out a plan of action.

Sen. Hatchett and state representatives Victor Anderson and Chris Erwin are also “actively considering” holding public hearings and town hall meetings to discuss highway safety and explore potential solutions.
