Mark Edward Roberts (Habersham County Sheriff's Office)

A jailer is recovering after being knocked unconscious by an inmate in the Habersham County Detention Center Thursday night, July 6.

The incident happened about 7 p.m. and resulted in inmate Mark Edward Roberts, 35, of Cornelia, being charged with aggravated battery and felony obstruction afterward.

Preliminary findings indicate the male jailer, whose name is being withheld during the ongoing investigation, was in the men’s block opening doors for the inmates who were allowed to be out of their cells during that time when Roberts ran down the stairs and immediately knocked him unconscious.

The jailer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville, where he was treated and then released on Friday.

During the incident, the entire jail was locked down to allow officers to focus on the injured jailer and the inmate accused in the incident.

Once the incident was concluded, the jail returned to normal operations and schedules.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and will take several days.

According to county spokesperson Rob Moore, no additional information will be released by the sheriff’s office until the investigation has concluded.
