A driver in a wreck that snarled the morning school commute in Demorest has been charged with DUI. Troopers also charged 24-year-old Harmoni Stanley of Rochester, New York, with failure to yield.
State troopers say Stanley was driving a Toyota Camry attempting to turn left onto Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway from GA 365 North when she pulled into the path of a southbound Chevy Traverse. The Traverse struck the Camry on the front passenger side. After impact, the Camry traveled off the west shoulder of the highway and struck a guardrail.
E-911 dispatched emergency crews to the scene around 7:08 a.m. Thursday, April 27.
Habersham EMS transported Stanley to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with possible minor injuries. The other driver, 54-year-old Christy Lecroy of Toccoa, was not injured, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) report.
GSP Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the wreck, which happened near Demorest Elementary and Wilbanks Middle School.
Drivers on Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway were unable to travel past the schools from the time of the wreck until the road reopened at 8:15 a.m., officials say.
